A panel in two parts: a list of categories on one side and the selected category posts beside it. The reader browses your sections without leaving the menu.
What separates it from an ordinary mega menu: it needs no nested items. The panel assembles itself from your categories.
This is the most capable of the menu panels, and the most useful for a magazine with real section structure.
## Turning it on
The same **submenu type** field, on a top-level menu item, set to categories megamenu. See Menu item options.
## Which categories appear
Two modes:
**Automatic.** A set number of categories, sorted by name, post count, recency, or your own order.
**Manual.** You choose the categories and arrange them by dragging.
Automatic works well on a site that is still growing. Manual is right when the order of sections is an editorial decision rather than an alphabetical fact.
## How the panel looks
For the category list: show the category description, the post count, the category image, its size, and the size of the name. The image comes from the category itself. See Category fields.
For the posts side: a heading above the posts with its own level and size, the card style, and how many appear.
Filled-in category descriptions and images are the entire difference between a panel that looks alive and an empty grid. This is the feature that punishes skipping that work most visibly.
The panel shows categories but no posts
The selected category has no published posts, or the post count in the panel settings is zero.
Can I exclude a category from the panel?
In manual mode, yes: only what you pick appears. In automatic mode the selection follows the sort rule.
