A block pattern is a ready-made piece of layout for the WordPress editor. You can make one the source of your single posts, and then posts are drawn by it instead of by the theme native template.

The choice is at [[Verba > Theme Options > Single Post > General]], in the **single post source** field: native, advanced, Elementor template, or block pattern.

## What it costs

Read this before you switch, not after.

Settings for the native single post do not apply to a pattern. You get freedom of composition and you take on everything else.

The theme reading elements, the summary, the key points, the table of contents, the reading bar, do not appear in a pattern by themselves. You have to place them as blocks, and a block does not exist for every one of them.

A pattern earns its place for one kind of material, a photo essay or a recurring special format. As a replacement for ordinary posts across the whole site, it usually costs more than it gives.

## How to do it

### Build the pattern

Create it in the editor like any block layout and save it as a pattern. It then appears in the source list.

### Point the setting at it

Go to [[Verba > Theme Options > Single Post > General]], set the source to block pattern, and pick yours.

### Check a real post

Open a published article, not a draft with two paragraphs. Long content is where a pattern shows what it does not handle.
