Buying and downloading a theme on ThemeForest

Installation 7 min read

jkdevstudio themes are sold on ThemeForest, which is part of Envato Market. Buying takes a few minutes. The part that trips people up comes afterwards, when Envato offers two different downloads and most people take the wrong one.

Read this before you buy: a marketplace key is the smaller purchase.

It carries the theme, the Pro plugin, a permanent license and a limited support window. It does not carry the automatic updates, premium integrations, later demo packages, feature requests or the twelve months of priority support that a direct purchase does. The sections below set out exactly what is different, and buying directly costs the same order of money.

#Buying

Open the theme page on ThemeForest

Check that you are on the jkdevstudio listing for the theme, not a similarly named item from another author.

Choose a license

Envato sells a Regular license and an Extended license. The difference is about the end product you build, not about the theme features. Regular covers a site where visitors are not charged; Extended covers one where they are.

Decide about the support line

The cart may offer a longer support period as a separate line. That extends the MARKETPLACE window, which is the shorter, lower priority one described below. Our own window is bought in your account instead and is priority support, so it is worth reading that section before adding anything here.

Pay

Envato handles the payment. Nothing reaches jkdevstudio at this point.

Open your downloads

The theme now appears under Downloads in your Envato account, and stays there permanently.

#Choosing the right download

The download button offers two options, and they contain different things.

All files and documentation

The full package: the theme zip, the Pro plugin zip, the documentation and the license files. Take this one. It is the only download that includes the Pro plugin.

Installable WordPress file only

The theme zip alone. It installs, but the Pro plugin is not in it, so the Pro layer has to be installed separately from the theme dashboard afterwards.

The full package is a folder of files, not something WordPress can install.

Unzip it on your computer first, then upload the theme zip from inside it. Uploading the whole package produces "The package could not be installed. No valid theme stylesheet found." and it is the single most common install failure there is.

#What is inside the package

Unzipped, the package holds the theme zip, the Pro plugin zip, the documentation and the license text. Two rules apply to the theme zip:

Upload it exactly as it came. Do not unzip it and zip it back up: repacking adds an extra folder level inside the archive, and WordPress then reports the same missing stylesheet error.

Nothing needs to be kept locally. The purchase stays in your Envato downloads forever, so you can download the package again whenever you need it.

#Finding your purchase code

The purchase code proves the license is yours. Envato shows it on the Downloads page under License certificate and purchase code, and in the receipt email for the order.

It is a long string of letters, numbers and hyphens belonging to that one purchase. Keep it somewhere you can find again: it activates the theme and it identifies you when you open a support request.

#You do not need the Envato Market plugin

We recommend not installing the Envato Market plugin.

It asks you to generate a personal API token on Envato and paste it into your site, it only knows about Envato purchases so it is blind to anything bought directly, and it has not seen meaningful development in years. If you already run it for other items it does no harm here; it simply plays no part in how a jkdevstudio theme is updated.

#The support a marketplace key carries

Envato sells a support period with the item, six months by default. Inside it you can open one support thread for that product, and it is answered after our direct customers.

The window ends on the date your purchase carries, and it cannot be extended on Envato afterwards. Our own window is twelve months of priority support, bought in your account against the same license, and time bought there is added to whatever is left rather than replacing it.

Your account shows the date your own key carries.

The marketplace period can be switched off per item, so a newer purchase may arrive with none. The date on the license in your account is the only answer that is true for you specifically, and the support form states it before you write.

#What a marketplace key does not carry

These belong to the direct channel. None of them is a fault, and reactivating will not change any of them.

Not included What that means in practice
Automatic updates no Version Control screen; download the package again and install the zip over the current one
Premium integrations the catalog will not install them
Demos released after launch every demo that shipped with the theme stays yours; later ones do not
Priority support the marketplace window is one thread, answered after the direct queue
Feature requests the roadmap suggestion form is closed on a marketplace key; voting on published roadmap entries stays open to everybody

Every version is still yours: the purchase is permanent, the license never expires, and the files stay in your Envato downloads. What an Envato license covers sets out the rest of it, including how many sites one purchase is good for.

The reasoning behind that split, including what the marketplace keeps out of each sale, is written up on the main site.

Why our prices changed

What you get when you buy direct

If you already bought on the marketplace, you do not have to buy again to move up: the license in your account carries a Premium offer with the author share of your purchase applied as credit.

#Common questions

Do I have to buy again to keep getting new versions?

No. Every version stays available to you permanently and the license never expires. What a marketplace key does not have is the automatic route, so each new version is downloaded and installed as a zip.

I am an Envato customer and I want support. What do I do?

Open the request in your account, against that license. If the marketplace window is still running you have one thread there. If it has ended, buy a window here against the same license first, and that one is priority support.

Can I suggest a feature for the theme?

Voting on entries already published to the roadmap is open to everybody, including marketplace customers. Sending a new suggestion is part of the direct tiers, and upgrading the license opens it along with the rest of the list above.

I bought the longer support period on Envato. What did that buy?

A longer marketplace window, which is the same limited tier for longer. It does not become priority support, and it still cannot be extended once it ends.

I took the installable file only. Do I need to download again?

Not necessarily, because the theme dashboard can install the Pro plugin for you once the license is active, and downloading the full package is simply the other way to the same place.

Can I move the theme to a different domain later?

Yes, an item license covers one end product at a time so moving a site is fine, and deactivating the license on the old domain first is what frees the activation for the new one.

The purchase does not appear in my downloads

Envato purchases occasionally take a few minutes to show up, and if it is still missing after that then the problem sits on the Envato side rather than ours, so contact Envato support with your order number. We cannot see, verify or reissue an Envato order.

#Still stuck

Open a support ticket and say what you tried and where it stopped. Your product, your domain, a screenshot and the exact message you saw are usually enough to settle it in one reply.
