Blog Sidebar
Adding a sidebar to your blog gives readers quick access to search, categories, recent posts, and other helpful navigation. Here how to set it up.
#Enabling the Sidebar
- Go to Appearance > Customize > Blog Archive in your WordPress dashboard
- Find the Enable Sidebar toggle and turn it on
- Choose your preferred Position - Left or Right
The sidebar will appear on your blog archive page (the page that lists all your posts).
#Adding Widgets to the Sidebar
Once the sidebar is enabled, you need to add content to it:
- Go to Appearance > Widgets in your WordPress dashboard
- Look for the Blog Sidebar widget area
- Click the + button to add blocks/widgets to this area
- Arrange them in the order you'd like them to appear
#Recommended Widgets
Here are some popular widgets that work great in a blog sidebar:
- Search - lets visitors quickly find posts by keyword
- Recent Posts - shows your latest blog entries, keeping the sidebar fresh and dynamic
- Categories - displays a list of your blog categories so readers can browse by topic
- Tag Cloud - shows your most-used tags as clickable links, with more popular tags appearing larger
You can also add any other WordPress widget or custom block - text, images, custom HTML, and more.
Keep your sidebar focused and clean. Three to four widgets is usually the sweet spot - enough to be helpful without overwhelming your readers.
The sidebar only appears on the blog archive page. Individual blog posts use their own layout (Classic or Split) which you can configure in the Single Post settings.
