Limits and Restrictions
The bundled plugins included with Monogram (JKDEVKIT and Advanced Custom Fields PRO) have specific guidelines for updates and management. Following these guidelines ensures your site remains stable and fully compatible with the theme.
#Do Not Update Bundled Plugins Independently
The most important rule for bundled plugins:
Do not update JKDEVKIT or ACF PRO independently through the WordPress plugin update system or by downloading newer versions from external sources. Always let theme updates deliver the correct plugin versions.
Here is why this matters:
- Version compatibility - Each Monogram release is tested with specific versions of JKDEVKIT and ACF PRO. Updating a bundled plugin to a newer version independently could introduce compatibility issues, broken features, or PHP errors.
- Custom modifications - The bundled versions may include theme-specific modifications or patches that differ from the publicly available versions.
- Rollback difficulty - If an independent update causes problems, rolling back to the correct version can be complicated.
#How Bundled Plugin Updates Work
When a new version of Monogram is released:
- The theme package includes updated
.zipfiles for JKDEVKIT and ACF PRO (if new versions are available). - After you update the theme, TGMPA detects that newer bundled plugin versions are available.
- A notification appears in your dashboard prompting you to update the bundled plugins.
- Follow the TGMPA prompts to update them - this installs the correct, tested versions.
#ACF PRO License Considerations
The ACF PRO plugin bundled with Monogram is licensed under the theme Envato license. This means:
- You do not need a separate ACF PRO license to use it with Monogram.
- The bundled version is intended for use with Monogram only.
- If you want to use ACF PRO features on a site without Monogram, you need your own ACF PRO license from advancedcustomfields.com.
- If WordPress shows an ACF PRO update notification in Dashboard > Plugins, ignore it for the bundled version. Wait for the Monogram theme update to deliver the compatible version.
If you see an ACF PRO update available in your WordPress Plugins page, do not apply it directly. Wait for the next Monogram theme update, which will include the tested ACF PRO version.
#What If I Already Updated Independently?
If you have already updated a bundled plugin to a newer version and encounter issues:
- Deactivate the problematic plugin via Dashboard > Plugins.
- Delete the plugin through the WordPress plugin manager.
- Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Install Plugins.
- Reinstall the bundled version from the TGMPA list. This restores the version packaged with your current Monogram installation.
- Activate the reinstalled plugin.
#Plugin Conflicts
If you install other plugins that conflict with the bundled plugins, here are common scenarios:
Scenario | Solution |
|---|---|
Another theme/plugin bundles a different version of ACF PRO | Deactivate the duplicate. Only one instance of ACF PRO should be active at a time. |
A free ACF plugin is installed alongside ACF PRO | Remove the free version. ACF PRO includes all free features. |
JKDEVKIT conflicts with another jkdevstudio product | Ensure only one version of JKDEVKIT is active. Multiple jkdevstudio themes on the same site share a single JKDEVKIT instance. |
#Summary of Rules
- Let Monogram theme updates manage JKDEVKIT and ACF PRO versions.
- Do not update bundled plugins independently via the WordPress Plugins page.
- Do not replace ACF PRO with the free ACF version.
- If issues arise, reinstall bundled plugins from TGMPA.
- Keep your theme up to date to receive the latest compatible plugin versions.
