This page and the Elementor one describe the same route in two different editors. The only difference is what you draw with.

Three steps: build the archive layout as a template, put a post listing inside it, then assign it to your archives in the settings. You design the archive once and it serves every archive page, rather than building a page each time.

#Build it

Create the pattern

In the WordPress editor, build the archive layout as you want it: a header area, your listing, anything else the page should carry. Save it as a pattern.

Add a post listing

Insert the post listing block where the posts belong. This is the part that will fill with content.

Switch the listing to archive mode

In the listing settings, turn on archive mode.

Step three is where everybody gets stuck. Without archive mode, the listing pulls posts from its own query, so every archive on your site shows the same fixed set of posts.

Archive mode makes the listing take its posts from the page query instead. On a tag page it shows that tag posts, on a category page that category , and on a search page the results.

That is what lets one pattern serve every archive.

#Assign it

Go to VerbaTheme OptionsArchiveGeneral and set the archive source to block pattern, then pick yours. The choice between the four sources is always in that one place, and switching between them loses nothing: your saved patterns and templates stay where they are.

#When it is worth it

Worth it: the archive needs a layout you cannot assemble from settings, or you already have a working process in this editor.

Not worth it: everything you want is available in the advanced archives. A pattern is yours to maintain by hand; settings survive updates on their own.

My pattern shows the same posts on every archive

Archive mode is off on the listing inside it. That is the fix, and it is the only common failure of this setup.

Can I use a different pattern for one category?

The source setting is global. For one category only, use its own fields, or keep the advanced source and adjust from there.
