Likes, views, and comment votes in Verba

This article covers functionality available to customers on the Pro version.

If your site has no comments and isn't going to have any, leave these switched off. An empty counter under an article works against it, because zero is a number and readers read it.

Where people do comment and come back, these signals show what moved readers, which a count of page opens can't.

#What is available

Settings are at VerbaTheme OptionsSingle PostFooter, in the Likes and Comments groups. Like the rest of that page, they appear once Single Post Source on the General tab is set to Advanced.

Comment voting is the simplest way to lift useful comments to the top without moderating by hand.

Collapse the thread when a short article carries a long discussion. Otherwise the comments become most of the page, and a reader arriving from search scrolls through a conversation to reach nothing.

#Views

Views are counted automatically for every post. They're shown wherever you add Views to a meta line: Meta Parts at VerbaTheme OptionsSingle PostHeader for the post header, and the meta settings of each listing for cards. Likes and the comment count can go in the same meta line.

#Where the data lives

All of it is written to the post's own fields, not to an external service. The numbers stay yours, and any plugin that can read post meta can read them.

In the admin, likes and views appear as columns in the posts list. Views & Likes Columns at VerbaTheme OptionsGeneralSite, group Misc, is on by default. Sort by them to rank your posts by what worked.

Can somebody like a post repeatedly?

The choice is remembered per reader, so a second visit doesn't add a second like.

Do views count my own visits?

No. Views from editors and administrators, previews, admin screens, and search engine robots aren't counted, and each reader is counted once per post per session. Treat the numbers as relative rather than exact all the same.

Should I show view counts publicly?

On a new site, no. A visible count of 3 tells a reader that nobody is here. Add them to the meta line once the numbers help you rather than embarrass you.
