Menu item options
Every menu item carries its own settings panel on top of the standard WordPress fields. Icons, label pills, subtitles, and the submenu type all come from here.
Find it at AppearanceMenus, expanding an item. The theme tabs appear under the standard fields. These are local settings: they affect this item and no other.
#Presentation
A small mark next to the name, like "new" or "popular."
The wording, the styling (primary, accent, secondary, or custom), and whether it sits left or right of the name. Custom opens its own background and text color fields.
A second line under the item name in a submenu, shown when the submenu has subtitles enabled.
A pill on every item stops being an accent. One or two across the whole menu is what makes them work.
#Submenu type
The main field on this panel, and the one that turns on the complex dropdowns.
- Plain
An ordinary submenu list, built from the item nested items.
- Columns megamenu
A wide panel with the nested items laid out in columns.
- Categories megamenu
A panel of categories with their posts, assembled automatically.
- Category posts
The category recent posts shown in the dropdown.
The submenu type is set on a top-level item. A nested item has no submenu type of its own, so if the field seems to do nothing, check which item you are editing.
Plain and columns are built from nested items, so they are empty without them. The two category modes assemble themselves and need no nested items at all. See Mega menus and Category mega menus.
Plain submenus have two more switches: break a long list into columns after a set number of items, and allow nested submenus that open to the side.
#The banner column
A submenu can carry a card with an image and a link. It is the simplest way to make the menu something more than a list, and it is where a seasonal promotion belongs if you have one.
My mega menu is empty
The type is columns or plain, and the item has no nested items. Add them in the menu editor first.
Can I set an icon for a submenu item?
Yes, the panel is on every item. Icons read best on top-level items and on category entries, and quickly become noise on a long plain list.
