Continuous reading: the next post without a click

One setting: load the next article underneath the current one as the reader nears the end of the text. It is at VerbaTheme OptionsSingle PostGeneral, off by default, and it needs the advanced post source.

The goal is small and specific: not making somebody choose what to read next. A reader who finished keeps reading.

#What happens at the crossover

This is not just appended text. When the next post fills the screen, the page switches to it: the address in the browser changes, so does the tab title, and so do the page meta tags.

The back button returns to the previous post rather than throwing the reader off the site.

#The new post arrives alive

The next article is not dead markup pasted in. Its post listings work, the reading bar switches to its media and its progress, and deferred images load exactly as on a normal page.

That is why the feature is more than a single option: everything that lives on a post page has to start again for the new one.

#When not to turn it on

Do not combine it with every other way of holding a reader at once. Together with the floating card and the exit-intent banner, it is too much. Pick one.

Which post comes next?

The next one in the same order the previous and next links use, so it follows your publishing sequence.

Does it hurt SEO?

Search engines request each post URL directly and get the ordinary page. What they see does not change.

Can a reader turn it off?

No, it is a site setting. If your audience reads long-form on phones, consider whether it is the right choice for them at all.
