Category mega menus - Verba
A category mega menu is a panel in two parts: your categories on one side and the selected category's posts beside it. The reader browses your sections without leaving the menu. The panel builds itself from your categories, so it needs no nested items.
#Turn it on
Set the submenu type
At AppearanceMenus, expand a top-level item and set Submenu type to Categories megamenu. See Menu item options.
Set up the panel
Two buttons appear under the type. Edit categories opens the panel settings, described below. Edit listing opens the look of the posts: card type, card parts, and the rest of the listing settings, as a grid.
Save the menu
The panel settings are saved with the menu item.
#Which categories appear
On the Categories tab of Edit categories, Category selection mode has two options:
- Auto
Number of categories (8 by default), sorted by name, post count, most recent, or ID, in the Order you pick.
- Manual
You pick the categories and drag them into order.
Auto works well on a site that's still growing. Manual is right when the order of sections is an editorial decision.
The same tab sets what each category row shows: Show category description, Show post count, and Show category image, with the image size and the size of the name. The image comes from the category itself. See Category fields.
#The posts side
- Heading
Show heading above posts (the current category's name, hidden on phones), its tag and size, and Show button, which links to that category's archive.
- Posts
Posts per category (4 by default, from 2 to 8), and the sort field and direction.
- Layout
The space between category rows, and Width preset: auto or full width.
- View all link
A link to the full category archive at the bottom of the list.
Fill in category descriptions and images. Without them the panel looks like an empty grid.
The panel shows categories but no posts
The selected category has no published posts.
Can I exclude a category from the panel?
In Manual mode, yes: only what you pick appears. In Auto mode the selection follows the sort rule.
