Verba accessibility group: the skip to content link

This article covers functionality available to customers on the Pro version.

The Accessibility group in VerbaTheme OptionsGeneralOptimization holds exactly one setting. It is not an accessibility mode or an overlay; it is a switch above something the theme already does.

Shows the keyboard "skip to content" link at the top of every page.

#What the link does

Somebody navigating with a keyboard moves through a page with Tab, one focusable element at a time. Without a skip link, that means walking through the entire header and navigation menu before reaching the first word of the article. On every page.

The skip link is the first thing focus lands on. Press Tab once on a fresh page, press Enter, and you are at the content. It stays invisible for everyone else until it receives focus.

Turning it off is not a visual choice. It puts the whole navigation between a keyboard user and your writing, every single time they open a page. Leave it on unless you have a specific reason.

#What is not in this group

People look here for the automatic H1 and do not find it. It is in the SEO group of the same tab, on purpose: exactly one top-level heading per page is a document structure question, not an assistive technology one. See General: optimization.

Everything else that makes a site usable, alt text, heading order, link wording, contrast, captions, and a visible focus ring, depends on your content and your color choices rather than on a setting. #Questions

Is Verba accessible out of the box?

The theme handles its side: focus states, semantic markup, keyboard-reachable controls, and this skip link. The finished result also depends on your images having alt text, your headings being in order, and your palette having enough contrast. No theme can do those for you.

Why can I not see the skip link on my site?

By design. It is hidden until it receives keyboard focus. Load a page, press Tab once, and it appears at the top.

Do I need an accessibility overlay plugin as well?

Overlay widgets do not make an inaccessible site accessible, and they can interfere with the assistive software a visitor already uses. Fixing the underlying content is what actually helps.
